WHAT’S YOUR 86?
In 2012, an opportunity arose: an invitation to try out for the NBA, not as a player, but as a referee.
This was a dream unfolding, a goal I had nurtured since my youth. With the invitation came a jersey emblazoned with #86, a number that would soon hold significant meaning for me.
Despite my anticipation and preparation, the outcome differed from what I hoped. I didn't make the cut. Reflecting like any top official, I identified three key weaknesses I could have improved: Confidence, Ego, and Adversity.
Confidence: I looked confident but didn't feel it. Absolute confidence comes from preparation and self-talk, not just past wins. I learned that courage, not fear of mistakes, should drive me.
Ego: I thought the invitation was a formality. I was wrong. Humility, not ego, fuels growth.
Adversity: Instead of resisting tough times, I learned to embrace them. They're not surprises but opportunities.
This experience was a turning point for me. I realized I was guided by feelings rather than a firm standard. A personal standard doesn't care how you feel; it demands consistent action.
My #86 jersey is my daily nudge to control what I can and stick to my standard.
We often talk about standards in business, but what about the ones we set for ourselves?
What standard drives you?
